Happiness is everything, or is it? Explorations on the meaning of psychological well-being.

Why this mattered

Ryff’s 1989 paper mattered because it challenged the dominant equation of well-being with happiness, life satisfaction, or the balance of positive over negative affect. Drawing from developmental, clinical, existential, and humanistic psychology, Ryff argued that psychological well-being was not simply feeling good, but functioning well across distinct dimensions: self-acceptance, positive relations, autonomy, environmental mastery, purpose in life, and personal growth. This reframed well-being from a hedonic outcome into a multidimensional account of human flourishing.

The shift made a new research program possible. Once well-being could be measured as structured psychological functioning, researchers could ask more precise questions: whether people can report high happiness but low purpose, whether aging affects autonomy differently from personal growth, whether social inequality shapes mastery and self-acceptance, and whether interventions should target meaning, relationships, or agency rather than mood alone. The Ryff scales became one of the central instruments for studying eudaimonic well-being, helping move the field beyond global happiness scores.

Its later importance is visible in positive psychology, lifespan development, health psychology, and public-health research. Subsequent work on flourishing, meaning in life, successful aging, resilience, and well-being biomarkers built on the paper’s core claim: well-being is not a single feeling but a profile of capacities and orientations. That distinction allowed later breakthroughs to connect psychological well-being with physical health, social conditions, and intervention design, while keeping open the empirical possibility that “being happy” and “living well” are related but not identical.

Abstract

El Bienestar Psicológico ha sido ampliamente abordado en la Psicología; sin embargo, poco estudiado desde la Psicología de las emergencias y desastres. El objetivo de la investigación que dio origen a este artículo fue caracterizar las condiciones de vida y el bienestar psicológico de los adolescentes damnificados por las altas lluvias en Campo de la Cruz, municipio del departamento del Atlántico, como primera fase de un proyecto de intervención. Se realizó una investigación de tipo cuantitativo, descriptivo, en la que participaron 228 estudiantes entre los 13 y los 18 años de edad. Se concluye que después del desastre, un grupo significativo de los adolescentes reporta satisfacción respecto a diversas áreas de la vida, pero señalan falencias en la autonomía y relaciones personales, y no están satisfechos con sus condiciones económicas, ni con los espacios de los que disponen para realizar sus actividades educativas.
